A contract was signed in May granting an option on the movie rights to Bloody Jack for one year, renewable, to two production companies, Atypical Productions and ASR Productions. They're the people who put together Because of Winn Dixie and Bridge to Terabithia. (ASR stands for AnnaSophia Robb, who has expressed interest in playing Jacky.) This does not mean that a movie is going to be made, it only means that these companies have exclusive rights to the book while they try to raise the money to actually do the film, and they're not having much luck - shooting historical novels at sea costs a lot of money, and Hollywood doesn't like to do movies with female leads, hard as that is to believe.

October 1, 2006:

The fourth book in the series, In the Belly of the Bloodhound, was officially published today. Early reviews are excellent.

October 26, 2006

Just received word that Jacky is going on audio! A contract is being drawn up with Listen & Live productions to produce tapes, disks, and digital downloads of Bloody Jack. Harcourt says that Listen & Live is a very good company, so we are very pleased. The audio will be out in the Spring. Jacky on iPod, imagine that...

Have found that the audio book of Bloody Jack has been completed - The narrator is Katherine Kellgren. Her bio:

Katherine Kellgren has appeared onstage in London, New York, and Frankfurt. Her recent work includes everything from the role of Laura in a regional production of The Glass Menagerie, to appearances on Comedy Central. She has recorded numerous plays and dramatizations of novels for the radio, including winners of the Audiofile Earphones Award and the Peabody Award. She is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
She's plainly British, so that'll help.

Have gotten the rough pages of Mississippi Jack and are going through them to check for last minute changes and errors. The Advanced Reading Copy is next. The thing is totaling out at 616 pages which is something of a surprise, considering we had turned in a manuscripts of 522 pages. But that oughta keep some of you off the streets for a while, anyway.

Saw the initial sketches by Cliff Neilsen for the cover, and they look great.

The first draft of the sixth book in the series is on our editor's desk - working title:

In Love and War
being the Further Adventures of
Jacky Faber,
Midshipman, Fine Lady, and Beau Sabreur

Of course we know that title will be changed (There was a movie of that title that came out in '96), but it'll work for now.

Hey, big news - Bloody Jack is being translated into French - The Old Guy is delighted, considering the fact that he got C's and D's in French in high school and college. He loves the irony.

Being the Further Adventures of
